There is some suggestion that Carey came up with the concept for the song to tie-in with the 1992 Dustin Hoffman movie of the same name. One of the results of this shift in gears was 'Hero'. So when recording began on her third album, Music Box, Columbia decided to soften the singer's music and vocals in an attempt to make a more commercially viable album. Unfortunately, while that album did spawn the incredible title track, Mariah's label Columbia weren't too impressed with the record's chart performance. Therefore, when it came to recording her follow-up, Emotions, in 1991, Mariah was insistent that she hold more creative control over the musical direction. While Mariah Carey found success with her 1990 self-titled debut album, critics were distracted by the alleged poor songwriting on the album.
